This research project aims at the issues of environmental sustainability in urban public space. The work includes description of the action patterns and outcomes, and detection of the relevant factors that influence the action arenas. Cities could be the analytic unit of environmental sustainability policies. Although such policies are initially designed by the Taiwan central government, policy implementation should reply on the local regarding diverse preference and conditions. Starting from city actions, environmental sustainability could extend its effect to metropolitan areas and regions. The effect includes scale economics of green industries, the long-term cognition shape and environmental education in resident everyday life, sustainability in community development, etc.
The research target is village public space as action arenas of environmental sustainability of the Taipei residents. The village public space has received over 15 hundred million subsidy over years from the Taipei government. Some environmental sustainability actions emerge as the use of high luminaire efficiency equipment, the development of Auaponics (a system that combines conventional aquaculture with hydroponics in a symbiotic environment) and green roof activities, and the promotion of environmental education. The first step of this research is participation observation of the 19 selected villages which allow researchers enter into the field of village environmental actions, and gather information regarding space conditions, operation situation and action outcomes. The field notes provide empirical evidence to revise the conceptual framework of this research after theoretical literature review. The second part of this research is to conduct a general questionnaire survey of the 301 village public space in Taipei. The purpose of doing so is to examine the significant difference generated from the independent variables over the outcomes, detect the pair-correlation effect between variables, and predict the structural and causal relationships among the independent and dependent variables. The expected results of this research could systematically shows relevant factors and the patterns of urban environmental sustainability actions. Some suggestions are anticipated toward future policy designs.
